Introduction to Quran Surah Al Falaq and Surah An Naas
(Quran Surah Falaq & Surah Naas) The last two chapters of the Holy Qur’an Surah Al Falaq and Surah An Naas are known as Al Mu‘awwidhatayn meaning the two Surahs of seeking refuge in Allah
They are short yet powerful in meaning and they hold immense wisdom for every believer who wishes to live with peace safety and closeness to Allah
These chapters are often referred to as a spiritual shield that protects a Muslim from both external and internal dangers from forces that can be seen and forces that cannot be seen
The Prophet ﷺ himself frequently recited these Surahs for protection and also instructed the believers to recite them regularly before sleeping after prayers and in times of distress fear or danger
The beauty of these two Quran Surahs lies not only in their brevity but in the depth of their message
They remind us that while the world is full of dangers challenges and unseen harms true refuge and safety come only by turning to Allah alone
It is interesting to note that Surah Al Falaq mentions four specific dangers while Surah An Naas mentions only one danger yet the one mentioned in Surah An Naas is so great that it requires the believer to remember Allah with three of His attributes Lord King and God of mankind
This difference invites reflection on why Allah structured these Surahs in this way and what lessons we as believers are meant to take from them
Let us explore their tafseer in detail and uncover the timeless lessons that continue to guide us today
Tafseer of Surah Al Falaq – Seeking Protection from Four Evils
Surah Al Falaq is revealed as a divine reminder for believers to seek the protection of Allah from four major sources of harm
Allah commands us to begin by seeking refuge in Him using one attribute
Say I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak Rabbil Falaq
Daybreak is the time when light emerges from darkness and clarity replaces uncertainty
It is a reminder that Allah is the One who brings light after the night and He alone can remove dangers fears and hidden threats
By declaring that He is the Lord of daybreak believers recognize that the power of protection lies with Him alone and not in anything else
After this introduction Allah instructs us to seek refuge from four specific types of harm each of which carries deep meaning
- Protection from the evil of all creation
This is the broadest form of protection
It includes every harmful creature force event or situation that may cause danger or harm in the life of a believer
It covers animals insects human enemies natural disasters illnesses and even unseen spiritual harms
The reminder here is that while the world contains countless dangers nothing can harm a believer unless Allah allows it and therefore turning to Allah is the only true protection
- Protection from darkness and fear
Allah then draws our attention to the night
When the night falls crimes and dangers increase
People often experience fear anxiety or vulnerability in darkness
It is also the time when harmful creatures roam and when evil forces such as shayateen are more active
By seeking refuge in Allah the believer acknowledges that only He can grant safety during the darkest hours both literally and spiritually
This teaches us that we must remember Allah in times of uncertainty and fear because His protection never weakens
- Protection from black magic and sorcery
The Qur’an openly acknowledges that black magic and sorcery exist and that they can cause harm to people physically emotionally and spiritually
Allah mentions those who blow on knots as a symbol of magic practiced in secret
Magic was used in ancient times and continues to exist in different forms today often creating division between people breaking families and spreading illness or hardship
Instead of turning to superstitions charms or false remedies Islam teaches that the only cure and protection against such evils is the remembrance of Allah and recitation of His words
This lesson strengthens the believer’s faith in Allah as the ultimate Protector
- Protection from envy and jealousy
The final danger mentioned in Surah Al Falaq is envy and jealousy
This is one of the most destructive forces in human relationships
When someone envies another person’s success health or blessings their hatred can lead to deep harm
Envy burns the heart of the jealous person and can also bring harm to the one who is envied through plots backbiting or ill wishes
The Prophet ﷺ warned against envy because it destroys good deeds and ruins the harmony of society
Seeking refuge in Allah protects us from being harmed by others’ jealousy and also purifies our own hearts from falling into envy
Through these four evils Surah Al Falaq teaches that life is filled with challenges dangers and threats but Allah is greater than all of them and He alone can shield us from harm
Tafseer of Surah An Naas – Seeking Protection from One Great Evil
Unlike Surah Al Falaq which mentions four dangers Surah An Naas focuses on a single danger but one that is far more destructive and dangerous than all the others combined
This danger is the whisperings of Shaytaan and Khannaas
Allah begins Surah An Naas by commanding us to seek refuge in Him with three of His attributes
Say I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind the King of mankind the God of mankind
Each of these titles carries deep meaning
Lord of mankind reminds us that Allah is the Creator Sustainer and Guardian of every human being
King of mankind reminds us that Allah has complete authority and power over His creation and no one can escape His command
God of mankind reminds us that Allah alone deserves worship and devotion and no one else should be obeyed or worshipped
Why are these three attributes mentioned before the evil is described
It is because the evil of Shaytaan attacks in every direction and only by recognizing the complete power of Allah can a believer resist such an enemy
The whisperings of Shaytaan and Khannaas
Khannaas refers to the hidden whisperer who tries to plant evil thoughts doubts and temptations directly into the hearts of people
This whisperer could be Shaytaan a jinn or even a human being who pretends to be a friend but plants seeds of hatred envy or disbelief
The danger of whisperings is that they are subtle and hidden
They can enter the heart without anyone realizing and slowly lead a person away from faith trust and righteousness
Unlike external harms like sickness or physical danger this evil works internally attacking the heart mind and soul
This is why Surah An Naas emphasizes it so strongly reminding believers to constantly seek refuge in Allah
Why three attributes of Allah are mentioned
The whispering enemy is powerful and persistent attacking from all sides
He attacks the faith of a person by planting doubts about Allah or the truth of Islam
He attacks relationships by sowing hatred jealousy or mistrust
He attacks trust by making people doubt themselves or lose hope in Allah’s mercy
Therefore Allah reminds us that He is the Lord the King and the God of mankind and only He can provide complete protection from this unseen enemy
Lessons from Quran Surah Falaq and Surah Naas for Daily Life
The lessons from these two Surahs are timeless and apply to every believer in every era
- Whisperings can destroy marriages friendships and faith in seconds reminding us to guard our hearts with the remembrance of Allah
- Envy and jealousy can burn hearts and blessings teaching us to be content with what Allah has given us
- Sorcery and darkness may harm us physically and spiritually but Allah is greater than all evils
- True safety lies only in seeking Allah’s refuge sincerely and regularly
These Surahs remind us that external dangers and internal dangers are real but both are powerless before the will of Allah
